Understanding Thread Plug Gages
What is a Thread Plug Gage?
A thread plug gage is a somewhat simple device that is designed and made to exacting specifications in order to test the tolerances of any threaded holes. There are a wide variety of sizes and shapes of thread plug gages so that you can find a thread plug gage that is right for just about any part that has threaded holes that need to be at a specific size in order for the entire project to fit together properly. The thread plug gage is often referred to as "go/no-go gage" because of the type of task it performs in testing the tolerance of the holes in a part.
Flexible, reversible, trilock, taperpipe and taperlock are all examples of different types of thread plug gages. These gages are generally available in steel and chrome and are precision hand lapped and polished to ensure superior accuracy because the entire purpose of them is to ensure the accuracy of your parts. These gages should made in compliance to industry standards and traceable to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) to ensure their accuracy and yours. In order to test your parts quickly and efficiently it is important to have on hand the right types of thread plug gages.
What does a Thread Gage Do?
The entire purpose of a thread gage is to ensure the accuracy of any threaded parts. The thread gage is the device that is used to screw into any threaded holes and test their size down to very precise tolerances. Small errors in tolerances can cause parts to fail over time whether they are too tight or too loose. By simply screwing in the correct type and size of thread gage you may determine whether the hole is the right size. You will also be able to determine whether the threads in the hole are within designed tolerance limits to ensure perfection in all your parts.
